For Pilates instructors

Clinical Pilates courses for the progressive Pilates Instructor

Pilates coursesFisioplus Pilates recognises that its training courses can benefit students from all backgrounds, not just Physiotherapists.  Following popular demand we have developed a specific course for Pilates instructors, professionals whom are already experts and have experience at teaching Pilates to clients. We understand that just teaching exercise modifications is of little use to true professionals as most already have a good grasp of this. Instead we help you to understand more about some of the pathologies and problems that many of your existing clients will be living and working with.  This knowledge will also allow you to appeal to greater number of people and increase your client base. Fisioplus Pilates courses teach you how to evaluate individual clients at depth giving you a much deeper understanding of where their weaknesses and vulnerabilities lie.  This allows you to be more prescriptive in the class so that the objectives of the individual client are met more efficiently. We believe that it’s not enough to recognise that a client has back pain and therefore must avoid certain exercises.  What is really needed is to assess why they may have pain, and therefore which exercises are going to be of most benefit to make their problem better. We touch upon specific common pathologies and problems too, so that you can recognise these quickly amongst your client group. There are two modules:

  1. The lumbar spine, the pelvis and the lower limb
  2. The cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the shoulder girdle

Module I The lumbar spine, the pelvis and the lower limb (16h)

This module introduces the FisioPlus Pilates concept and applies it to clients with problems in the lower back, pelvis and legs.

  • Theory lecture series - FisioPlus Pilates –What is it? Why we need it? and what are the clinical implications that make it different from traditional Pilates?
  • An overview of the pertinent research into the theory of muscle imbalance and its contribution to common back pains – Fisioplus Pilates corrects these imbalances
  • Assessment Tool Workshop – learn how to use validated tests to analyse movement of the lumbar spine, the pelvis and lower body alignment
  • What do the results mean? You aren’t expected to be a clinical expert immediately, we’ll walk you through this process
  • A series of modified yet progressive Pilates matwork exercises are taught which can be applied to correct the problems previously noted in the assessment section
  • Real case studies are used to highlight the use of Fisioplus Pilates and how exercises can be used more clinically and specifically.
  • Clinical reasoning workshop – identify the problem, select the appropriate exercises and understand WHY and HOW it is going to help.
  • “LIVE” case assessments and treatment planning. Yes, you can invite a client who has a problem and see how FisioPlus Pilates can help them before your very eyes, its not just theoretical stuff, you WILL be able to apply these ideas immediately and safely to your clients

Participants will need to submit two case studies prior to attending module 2.

Module II The cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the shoulder girdle (16 h)

A follow on module to complete the picture.  We’ll look at problems that involve the neck, upper back and shoulder.  This is a fantastic opportunity to gain more indepth knowledge that will enable you to really help your clients.

  • Theory lecture series – Biomechanics of movement – Understanding muscular slings improves the clinical reasoning skills which assist in the effective and  safe prescription of Pilates
  • Assessment Tool Workshop – includes tests to analyse the movement and function of the neck, upper back and the shoulder
  • Basic differential diagnostic skills for shoulder problems and what to take extra care of during Pilates.
  • A series of progressive modified Pilates exercises are taught which are pertinent for improving the pilates outcome of your clients with problems in these areas
  • Real case studies illustrating the effectiveness of using Fisioplus Pilates.
  • “LIVE” case presentations and treatment planning. Once again you will be invited to showcase a client that could be having some problems in their class or are complaining of pains.  As a group we will evaluate and provide immediately effective Pilates exercises.  This will include techniques learnt in both modules putting everything together.
  • Clinical reasoning discussion about common specific pathologies and case studies submitted by participants.
